The island of Iraklia

The island of Iraklia is one of the islands of the so called “Small Cyclades” which surround the much larger island of Naxos. Iraklia measures 17,5 km2 and has around 110 inhabitants. The island is served by ferries but also sees visitors that come for a daytrip with an excursion boat from Naxos Town. The main port is called Agios Georgios which is situated in the north op Iraklia. Here you find some accommodations, a couple of tavernas and a mini market.

Agios Georgios has a sandy beach with some trees on it where you can sit in the shade. Most of the accommodations are placed on the outskirts of the village towards the best beach of the island, which is called Livadi (south east of Agios Georgios).

Livadi is a large sand beach with tavernas. It looks out over the neighbouring island of Schinoussa. From Agios Georgios past Livadi Beach the road continues to the village of Chora Panagia. On the way you will pass an ancient tower that was once built by pirates.

Panagia is a small village with a hand full of houses and a church. From Panagia towards the west there is a path that leads to a beautiful cave (including stalactites) near Voukaria Bay.

On Iraklia there are no banks so you must bring cash with you if you want to visit the island, and allthough there is a road leading from Livadi to Panagia there is no petrol station and there are also no taxis or a bus service. Iraklia is more of an island for walkers. The highest hill is in the south and it is 419 meters high and you can look around for your own beach.
